the
hapi gifuto project continues as Stefen Robinson mixes sounds together around ISU campus the last couple of weeks. i went 4 times to witness the magic. one of the big differences w/ Stefen's setup is that instead of using a car battery & transformer, he just scouted out outlets in advance. another difference is that he's just sending the sound into a boombox rather than a slightly more robust amp & speakers. amazingly he could still get a decent volume. hooray!
some guy named Frank wrote this amazing script, the
Livejournal Random Images generator. it is addicting. it's like rumaging through random people's stuff. both voyeuristic and enlightening.
i'm hooked on these tracks rx is making. first gwb singing Sunday Bloody Sunday and now Imagine. i guess this is all part of The Bush Raps (Re)Mix Contest.. and they provided a
huge archive of samples. 10 gigabytes. i'm listening to the track that won, and it just doesn't compare to the rx material.
Downhill Battle is pretty fast w/ their projects (if only we were that good!). 8 days after the Funkadelic vs. NWA ruling they announce
3 Notes and Runnin'.
oh my! this is a
troubling ruling... the Boston Herald reports "the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that it is illegal even to rip off musical snippets that no one would recognize."... and the court elaborates "If you cannot pirate the whole sound recording, can you `lift' or `sample' something less than the whole? Our answer to that question is in the negative. Get a license or do not sample. We do not see this as stifling creativity in any significant way.''
i've always felt a bit hesitant to release/sell mp3s (free downloads is fine) since i hate the idea of going below cd quality for an 'official' release.
FLAC, though, seems to be an interesting alternative. but will online releases ever carry the same weight, though, as a physical release? i guess we may eventually do both, as there are too many advantages to doing stuff online. the main advantage being that we could lower the cost and potentially reach more people.
i was watching some
Sadie Benning videos last night and am becoming fascinated with her early work. very initimate lofi videos (shot on some Fisher Price camera).. and i'm just finding out that she was was one of the founding members of Le Tigre.

"Cleveland's Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) constructs songs for the schizophrenic's mix tape. Sampling familiar Top 40 hits from the 80's, 90's, and beyond, Girl Talk weaves together an audio assemblage of juxtaposed and interspersed pop hits, creating a strange logic between a Cyndi Lauper chorus and a Jay-Z hook. Girl Talk is the FM dial set to strobe." - from
South Bend Regional Museum of Art. i still don't understand exactly what they're exhibiting.
average internal clock is 24 hours and 11 minutes

60x1 is one of the most insane web projects i've ever seen. i'm going to have to mimic some of his javascript. if only i'd known about this last spring when i trying to push students in more creative directions with javascript.
