Jon Appleton to leave Dartmouth

from an article about Untitled #29 and its appropriation & critique of video art: "This strategy may assuage the discomfort some may feel about Untitled #29.95's brazen violation of a widely honored if unwritten and ambiguous rule that it is acceptable to appropriate from commercial mass media, but not from another independent mediamaker."

obsessive compulsive last.fm user can't stand the thought of crossing the 1000 posts line. he remains at 995. why do they put up such stats? i'm convinced that the whole last.fm thing is making me more obsessed with my own stats as well. i don't post to forums etc., but i check my top 10 every week and am regularly checking to see if it logged the last few tracks that i played. i can't even listen to mp3s any more without thinking about how it's going to be logged on last.fm. it reminds me of when i was a kid and i would display my top albums up on the ridges above the closets in my room. always rotating them as my opinion changed. i actually find the last.fm thing frustrating. at one moment i want to just turn it off and have it stop logging the music, and then another moment i'm complaining in my head that they only have weekly and overall stats. what about monthly, or quaterly? why can't i adjust parameters to decide how to weigh different plays over time??

show at coffeehouse (normal, il) earlier tonight. everything in roughly 10+ minute segments. nick hoffman guitar solo, i joined, stefen robinson joined. then i solo, sr solo on electric madolin (the highlight), all electronic trio, nh closes it all off. firefly then gets up for poetry about sr's mandolin solo and other things that escape description. a good show imo. going into it i was thinking i'm not that interested in such improv any more... but it's still an odd thrill.

since i'm too busy to write a description, here's someone else's report of Sufjan Stevens and the Canopy. perhaps one of the best concerts i've attended... and added to the highlights of Mutek this summer makes for a good year.

from ArtForum 10/2003: "The principle inventor of MP3 compression technology, Brandenburg recently slammed the practice of illegal file sharing while kneeling at the altar of analog music. 'My sympathy is always with the artists and even with the record labels," he remarked. "I don't like the Napster idea that all music should be free to everybody.'"

"I'm always surprised when I meet someone who thinks that sitting and writing is the only way of creating comedy. It's like meeting someone who thinks that in vitro fertilization is the only way to make a baby. You want to say, 'No, there's this whole other way of doing it that's natural and sometimes pleasurable'" -Tina Fey on scriptprov

from Ken Friedman's Forty Years of Fluxus:
•"What was unique about Fluxus as a community was that we named ourselves. We found and kept our own name. Art critics named abstract expressionism, pop art, minimalism and conceptualism. Fluxus named Fluxus."
•"If there can't be a boundary between art and life, there cannot be boundaries between art form and art form. For purposes of history, of discussion, of distinction, one can refer to separate art forms, but the meaning of intermedia is that our time often calls for art forms that draw on the roots of several media, growing into new hybrids."
•"Experimentalism doesn't merely mean trying new things. It means trying new things and assessing the results. Experiments that yield useful results cease being experiments and become usable tools, like penicillin in medicine or imaginary numbers in mathematics."
•"The experiments in art and technology that typified the 1960s were as important as they were ultimately without purpose. Their importance lay in the effort to explore new media and new possibilities. Nevertheless, the tendency of the artists to focus on technical solutions rather philosophical implications rendered the work both spectacular and shallow."
•"New paradigms engender new technology as well as new art, but few technologies give birth to interesting art forms."
•"A failure of philosophy is the problem. Too many artists are entranced with the physical qualities of media and unconscious about ideas. Art is burdened by attention to physical media and plagued by a failure to consider the potential of intermedia."
