"you try to encourage people to feel more like a patron of the arts instead of a consumer." - Jeff Tweedy. this is in response to file sharing, but i'm wondering if there are other ways to move more towards a model of patronage.
more radio goodness for P. Miles. #39 on Dusted's list that is compiled from a decent list of stations. and holding strong on KDVS from #1 to #4 and back up to #2. we'll definitely donate some discs to KDVS' fundraiser.
a quick personal summary of the Collage as Cultural Practice conference. i met people who i've communciated w/ by email 100s of times, but never met in person: Steev Hise, Carrie McLaren, Mark Hosler.... I also met Tom Forsyth, Lloyd Dunn, and others. a really amazing group of people w/ different perspectives.
the academic denseness was difficult, but it was balanced out w/ artist talks and performances.
the effort to encourage artists to be more socially engaged in their work was appreciated but at the same time artists will do what they do . i'm a bit at odds with any attempt to restrict artists intuition or to value intentionally politicized art over other approaches. i've always felt that art as a whole is more powerful is we don't all subscribe to same school of thought.
Negativland's videos were impressive. i hesitate to call myself a "fan," but i'm a few steps closer. the Tape-Beatles performance (3 projectors + audio) also had its impact. somewhat dark and depressing, but i guess it's reflective of the times.
all around, it was a good time, challenging, and enlightening. thanks Kembrew & Rudy & everyone else struggling to make sesne of collage at the center of the empire.

"Back in 1953, a Harvard University study showed that three percent of the students graduating that year actually wrote down their specific career goals. Twenty years later, a team of researchers interviewed the class of '53 and found that the three percent who had written down their goals were worth more financially than the other 97 percent combined."
The Arcade Fire. in the last year the only rock band that lasts more than a couple of listens and w/ several solid tracks. worthy of the hype and best of '04 proclamations.
P. Miles hits #1 this week on
KDVS in Davis/Sacramento, CA.
space food from
LuvyDuvy. if you suck on it, it really does taste like neapolitan ice cream.
"'Cool' is never letting things go out of print. I think that's the most respectable thing you can do. Music should not be temporary. Period." -James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. IA has always held to this exact philosophy. Even if it means that something that made it into the black goes back into the red... we always repress if need be (with the exception of the exhibit cd, which you can download anyway).
things i've listened to lately: Khonner (the opening track is perfect.. i'm not so sure about the other tracks i've heard), Radian (nice!), and Atmosphere. thanks to R5 for posting mp3s. if only i lived in Philadelphia.
Audioscrobbler, another interesting net toy/forum to communicate with, waste time, etc.
"I think it's completely political for people to feel joy in a joyless culture. That in itself really is doing a great service to the planet." - Kathleen Hanna
"I was doing the Couture Cosmetique album (where) you had a lot of these moments that were really calm and jarring disruptions and quick volume changes. Those sorts of strategies make the listener never really have this totally complacent type of just sitting back and listening every now and then you think 'Oh, should I go back and lower my stereo?' And by the time you get to the stereo the volume has dropped again and you need to turn it up again. The idea is kinda to make the listener interact in their environment. That's what I was talking about, having the listener deal with the reality of listening." - Terre Thaemlitz from
Feedback Monitor interview

the Japanese magazine
Studio Voice is supposedly going to publish an article on IA along with short reviews of several (10?) releases. we haven't had this type of spotlight on the label for a while.
doing research on the web can be tricky, especially when i need to cite references with dates. i just found a good technique, though, to get the last modified date (or publication date). if you type javascript:alert(document.lastModified) in the location field and hit enter the date will pop up in an alert.
