  a quick personal summary of the Collage as Cultural Practice conference. i met people who i've communciated w/ by email 100s of times, but never met in person: Steev Hise, Carrie McLaren, Mark Hosler.... I also met Tom Forsyth, Lloyd Dunn, and others. a really amazing group of people w/ different perspectives.

the academic denseness was difficult, but it was balanced out w/ artist talks and performances.

the effort to encourage artists to be more socially engaged in their work was appreciated but at the same time artists will do what they do . i'm a bit at odds with any attempt to restrict artists intuition or to value intentionally politicized art over other approaches. i've always felt that art as a whole is more powerful is we don't all subscribe to same school of thought.

Negativland's videos were impressive. i hesitate to call myself a "fan," but i'm a few steps closer. the Tape-Beatles performance (3 projectors + audio) also had its impact. somewhat dark and depressing, but i guess it's reflective of the times.

all around, it was a good time, challenging, and enlightening. thanks Kembrew & Rudy & everyone else struggling to make sesne of collage at the center of the empire.  ¶ 11:40 AM

  doing research on the web can be tricky, especially when i need to cite references with dates. i just found a good technique, though, to get the last modified date (or publication date). if you type javascript:alert(document.lastModified) in the location field and hit enter the date will pop up in an alert.  ¶ 2:53 PM
